School Football Team Cup Match
Today we had our first fixture in the local cup competition. For this fixture, we travelled to Whiteley Primary with a squad of 9 children: Stanley, Bradley, Harry, Leyton, Oscar, Emily, Layla, Theo and James.
The children were in good spirits for their first match in a while and eager to get on the pitch and try to exact some revenge from the league fixture. Unfortunately, Whiteley had a blistering start and scored an early goal to put them 1-0 ahead. The teams then began to battle away with Whiteley creating more chances and looking more dangerous. One of their chances paid off and they increased their lead to 2-0. Some great defending from Layla prevented Whiteley creating some further chances to try and keep the score narrow.
We fought back, determined to get on the scoresheet and Leyton came extremely close to halving the deficit. Whiteley then continued to apply pressure and scored twice more without reply. A great chance for Oscar was foiled by a fantastic save by Whiteley’s keeper and we went in at half-time with Whiteley winning 4-0.
A quick turnaround at half-time and we set out to try and improve on the first half score. This was a much closer half with both teams battling well. Emily, James and Oscar were battling away up front and in midfield to try and create some chances for us but once again, Whiteley scored first. Not letting their heads drop, the children created some great chances that were just missing the finishing touch before a goalmouth scramble led to Bradley finishing and making the score 5-1. The team fought well but couldn’t create any more opportunities and Whiteley finished the game off with another goal to finish 6-1 winners. The children didn’t let their heads drop and kept fighting right until the end.
The cup run is over but we go again in the league soon with the children more determined than ever to show what they are capable of.
Thank you once again for all those who came to support,
