We are passionate about reading and want children to maximise their potential by working in partnership with parents. We introduce our readers to eight different characters, each of whom are master of a skill children use in reading. Our goal in creating them is to help children understand the similarities and differences between reading skills and when to use them.
The master characters are a routine part of everyday lessons and parents are encouraged to support the school by making them part of the conversations they have with their child when completing reading homework. Knowing what children love to read is important, but the enthusiasm in engaging with them about it is critical and cannot be understated. We promote a home/school reading partnership supporting parents to share an interest in their child’s reading. The Ranvilles Reading Masters focus on asking questions about books, encouraging a love and passion for reading.
Vocabulary is encompassed in all elements of schooling and is momentous in children’s progress and success. Our focus on vocabulary acquisition enriches and infuses all areas of curriculum learning in order for children to understand fully the concepts they are taught. By having rich stimulating texts, the children’s spoken and written language develops year on year. Learners are encouraged to find out the meaning of new words, impart knowledge with others and to analyse the effect that words can have on different audiences. We secure a depth of knowledge by finding origins of language, making connections between the uses of prefixes and suffixes and studying different word classes. When children leave Ranvilles, they are able to express ideas clearly and communicate with competence; enabling them to be EPIC as well as feeling safe, reflective readers.
