Fieldwork at Ranvilles Junior School

Fieldwork is a vital part of the statutory Geography curriculum and is taught in each year group. Fieldwork provides children with hands-on experience and encourages them to apply different geographical concepts in context to their surroundings. Pupils enquire: they ask questions, investigate and make discoveries about the world around them. This is a vital part of the Geography curriculum as it supports all pupils to develop their geographical skills in real-life contexts, such as observation, measurement and data collection. By participating, and, as pupils get older, leading and devising their own geographical enquiries, they connect the classroom learning with the outside world, making geography both relevant and exciting.

Implementing the Fieldwork curriculum at Ranvilles

The Ranvilles Geography curriculum has been designed to incrementally build across year groups through pupils’ application in practical fieldwork. Pupils become proficient in questioning, observing, measuring, recording and presenting their findings through our enquiry cycle approach. We have designed our curriculum so that fieldwork skills are taught in most units, with some units having a greater emphasis. Educational visits to local areas are designed to maximise opportunities the children have to apply their fieldwork knowledge and understanding in practical, real-life contexts.
