Welcome to the world of the Ranvilles Reading Masters. Using our eight different characters, children will master the skills of they will need to use in Key Stage 2 reading. Our goal in creating them is to help children understand the similarities and differences between the skills and when to use them.

Early Reading and Phonics

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. We are committed to ensure all our learners become fluent and competent readers.  Research shows that the ability to read fluently brings profound and wide-ranging benefits that have a lifelong, positive impact. We believe it is essential that all our children read fluently.

Phonics is a highly effective method of teaching early word reading. The teaching of phonics began when your child entered Year R.  We work in close partnership with our colleagues at Ranvilles Infant School to ensure we continue your child’s personal learning journey. Almost all children who receive high-quality phonics teaching will learn the skills they need to tackle and decode new words. We complement phonics with wider reading strategies to develop confidence, ability and a love of reading.

Our focus and determination to ensure all children are confident and fluent readers is relentless and benefits from parental engagment. If your child is being supported to read through a levelled Book Band phonics book, this will be carefully chosen for them to aid reading at home. This book can be changed regularly during your child’s allocated daily slot. Teachers and Teaching Assistants will use Matched Decodable Books in school to support independent reading. Learners will also benefit from group guided reading in class, using Focused Reading Banded Books.

At RJS, our phonics scheme is called All Aboard Phonics, which is a complete systematic, synthetic phonics curriculum for the early development of reading skills. For children who will benefit from a continued focus on phonics, please see the videos below, which will gives more information about how to support your child at home through our scheme.
